To put this in perspective just recall what the median annual household income was in 1970, which was was $7,564. This increased to $51,371 by 2012, the latest numbers available. When people point to inflation, they tend to hide the inflation in salary that went along with it.
If we divide both years’ income by 365 we get the average daily income:
1970- $20.72 per day.
2012: $140.74 per day.
Now if we consider the Filet-O-Fish which was $0.46 in 1970, and $1.40 without tax last time I checked in 2014. Now we divide the cost of a Filet-O-Fish into the daily income of then and now:
In 1970 a day’s pay would buy 45 Filet-O-Fish, or 2.22% of a day’s pay.
In 1912 a day’s pay would buy 100.5 Filet-O-Fish, or 0.99% of a day’s pay. (assuming 2014 prices are the same as in 2012).
As you can see salaries have inflated faster that the cost of fish sandwiches.
